Next-Gen Narratives: Strategies for Supporting High School Students in College Courses

Presenter: Tami Cottrell, D.C.
Location: Wapsi River Room

Next-Gen Narratives: Strategies for Supporting High School Students in College Courses explores practical approaches for college and dual-enrollment instructors working with high school students.  This session offers strategies to foster engagement, build academic confidence, and support the unique needs of high school learners navigating the rigor and independence of college-level courses. Instructors will leave with adaptable tools to scaffold complex material, improve communication, and create classroom environments where next-generation students can thrive and write their own academic success stories.

Next Chapters in Open Learning: What We’re Building Together

Presenter: Deb Lowman, Associate Dean of Library and Learning Resources
Location: Des Moines River Room

Open Educational Resources (OER) continue to play a vital role in expanding access, equity, and innovation in the classroom. This session will explore the momentum of open education efforts at EICC, highlight multidisciplinary initiatives across the U.S., and outline professional development opportunities available in the coming year. Together, we’ll look at how faculty, librarians, instructional designers, and staff are contributing to a more affordable and inclusive learning environment by adopting, adapting, and creating OER. You’ll hear about ongoing and emerging projects on our campuses, with a focus on collaboration and student impact. We’ll also take a national view, examining current trends and innovative approaches from institutions across the country—offering inspiration and insight into what’s possible.  Whether you’re new to open education or already involved, this session will connect our local work to broader movements and provide concrete next steps for deepening your engagement. Come ready to explore, reflect, and consider your own next chapter in open learning.

AI in the Classroom: Teach More, Grade Faster, Engage Better

Presenter: Raine Morford, IT Instructor
Location: Missouri River Room

AI isn’t replacing educators; it’s amplifying their impact. In this session, we’ll explore how community college instructors can leverage AI tools to streamline grading, deliver faster and more personalized feedback, and free up time for deeper engagement with students. Learn practical strategies for integrating AI into your teaching toolkit without sacrificing academic rigor or authenticity. We'll also debunk common myths: AI won’t give students all the answers—but it can help you ask better questions, provide clearer guidance, and focus more on what matters most—teaching.

Slime Mold vs. Humans: Who is Better, Faster, Stronger?

Presenter: Ashley Salazar; Biology Laboratory Assistant; Gary Buckley, Psychology Instructor; Eric Carr, Political Science Instructor
Location: Ohio River Room

Do you think you are smarter than Physarum polycephalum (slime mold)? Join us to explore and discuss a collaborative effort amongst SCC students, faculty, and staff that experimented with this very question. This hands-on independent study bridged psychology, political science, biology, engineering, technology, computer-aided design (3D printing), along with marketing and design to discover who is better, faster, stronger. Check out real slime mold in action and hear how students tested their mold to discover how these simple organisms can reveal complex human behaviors individually and collectively. This seminar used observational and interdisciplinary studies on slime mold as a model for decision-making, collective behavior, and adaptive responses. Slime mold was put against some rigorous challenges; join us to find out if it could “escape the fire,” navigate 3D printed mazes, and other situations. Watch timelapse videos of the projects and see photos of students in action. We'll discuss what was done, what we are doing, and where we are still going with these projects.

In this session, we'll highlight the planning, execution, and impact of CCC’s undergraduate research symposium. We'll explore strategies for organizing a campus-wide showcase, share some student projects, and offer practical ideas for fostering collaboration, supporting student research, and celebrating inquiry.

Gone Fission: How I Spent My Summer Vacation with Particle Physicists

Presenter: Tracy Hmielowski, Assistant Professor
Location: Des Moines River Room

Curious about what goes on at Fermi National Accelerator Lab? Interested in quantum physics, but not sure how it connects to biology or environmental science? Same here—at least, until this summer. I spent July at Fermilab as part of a STEM Educator Internship focused on quantum systems. The program included hands-on lessons in quantum physics, behind-the-scenes tours of labs and facilities not open to the public, and time to develop new activities for my courses. I'll share what I learned and highlight additional Fermilab opportunities for EICC students and faculty.

In this presentation, I'll share some of my research and fun facts about the saloon period. No beer will be provided.

Authoring Your Own Professional Development Story: Breaking Down Barriers in the College Space

Presenter: Deb Lowman, Associate Dean of Library and Learning Resources; Gabe Knight, Dean of Arts and Science
Location: Des Moines River Room

Explore how meaningful professional development often begins when we connect with peers in our disciplines, engage in national conversations, and seek opportunities aligned with our personal and professional goals. Too often, professional development is framed as a requirement or obligation—either voluntold attendance, or an opportunity presented with strings attached. It is easy for professional development to become something presented to us rather than shaped by us. This panel shifts the focus back to the individual: what happens when you pursue the learning you need? What kinds of growth and innovation emerge when professional development becomes a space for curiosity, relevance, and real community? Panelists will share personal stories about conferences, collaborative projects, webinars, and other opportunities that sparked unexpected breakthroughs or new directions in their work. Discussion will center on the value of discipline-specific engagement, the benefits of cross-institutional collaboration, and how self-directed learning connects directly to student success and institutional progress. Audience members will be invited to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they might write their next chapter in professional development—with a focus on meaningful growth rather than mandatory compliance or hoops.
