Meet Eddy the Otter

You may have heard the splash.

You may have seen the paw prints.

You may have wondered who was causing all that harmless commotion near the river, in the hallway, or suspiciously close to the snack table.

That’s our EICC mascot, Eddy.

Curious. Quick. Social. A bit mischievous. Always moving toward what’s next.

At EICC, the future isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you step into.

Eddy just happens to step in with webbed feet.

River otters are smart, social, adaptable, and full of energy. They solve problems. They work together. They know how to move through changing water. Sound familiar?

Our students balance work, family, classes, goals, and everything else life throws into the current. You start early. You come back. You change direction. You figure things out -- one next step at a time.

So does Eddy. He follows good ideas. He dives into new things. He turns “I’m not sure” into “Let’s try it.”

That feels a lot like EICC.

You start before everything feels perfect. You ask the next question. You build the skill. You find your people. You keep going.

You’re not waiting for the future to begin. You’re already in motion.

"Hi. I’m Eddy. I like rivers, snacks, good questions, new ideas, and people who try something before they feel totally ready. And I am so happy to be here. You’ll see me around campus, at events, online, and probably anywhere something exciting is happening. I’m not here to tell you what to do. You already know more than you think. I’m here to remind you to start. Ask. Show up. Keep going. Also, if there are snacks, I will find them."

Eddy didn’t just appear overnight; he was shaped by the people he represents.

Students, faculty, and staff chose our mascot through surveys and feedback. Again and again, the river otter rose to the top. It felt true to who we are and where we are: connected to the river, built on community, ready to move, and never stuck in one place for long.

The goal was bigger than choosing a mascot. Eddy needed to feel like us.

From there, his look and personality came together through several rounds of design. Each step focused on balance: approachable, not overly cartoonish. Confident, not stiff. Fun, but still ready for classrooms, campus events, community spaces, and every T-shirt he can get his paws on.

His name has meaning, too.

A river eddy is a place where the current shifts direction, often circling behind a rock, bend, or obstacle. It is still part of the river, but it moves differently. That feels like EICC. This is a place where you can pause, reset, gather momentum, and find your next direction. Not stuck. Not stopped. Still moving.

Niabi Zoo LogoEddy doesn’t stop at campus.

EICC is proud to partner with Niabi Zoo through a five-year sponsorship supporting the zoo’s otters and their daily care and enrichment.

At Niabi Zoo, you can meet Tina and Louise, two Asian small-clawed otters known for their intelligence, social behavior, and playful energy. They spend their days swimming, foraging, exploring, and solving problems together.

They use their hands more than their teeth to explore, build, and interact with their environment.

Honestly, Eddy respects the technique.

Tina and Louise bring otter energy to life every day: curiosity, teamwork, movement, and play. Visit Niabi Zoo to meet Tina and Louise and see the otter energy for yourself.

Over the next few months, Eddy will be making waves and more appearances:

  • At campus events
  • In classrooms and labs
  • Across social media
  • At your next big milestone.
  • And likely, in random hallways.
