Meet the Candidates and Elected Officials during Constitution Day Event Sept. 17
With congressional elections taking place this November, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges
is giving students and community members an opportunity to meet the people who serve,
or hope to serve, their communities.
The college will host a Constitution Day Meet and Greet from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 17, in the auditorium at Clinton Community College, 1000 Lincoln Blvd., Clinton.
Elected officials and candidates running for office have been invited to attend, share
their priorities and vision, answer questions and connect directly with students and
local constituents.
“Constitution Day is an opportunity to remind our students that democracy depends
on people who are willing to learn, ask questions and participate,” said Mardell Mommsen,
event organizer and Clinton Community College registrar. “Especially during an election
year, we want to give students and community members a welcoming place to meet candidates
and elected officials, hear different perspectives and become more informed voters.”
Attendees who are not already registered to vote will also have an opportunity to
register during the event.
Constitution Day is observed each year on Sept. 17, commemorating the signing of the
U.S. Constitution in 1787.
The college’s celebration encourages attendees to reflect on the freedoms and responsibilities
the Constitution represents, and the role each person can play in the democratic process.
