Accelerated Eight-Week Term: May 23 – July 16


In just eight short weeks, you can earn an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification with Eastern Iowa Community Colleges! Prepare to enter this extremely rewarding, life-saving profession with solid pay, job stability and diverse work days.

COURSE INFORMATION


The hybrid EMT program includes theory, practical lab, clinical practice and field internship. It consists of eight modules of instruction, airway management, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children and ambulance operations.

Lecture, course content, quizzes and exams will take place online using the college’s course management system, Canvas. In addition to the online course material, students are required to attend all in-person lab sessions and one skills session. (Skills sessions are offered Tuesday nights from 5:30 – 10 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

Students must also schedule and attend 24 hours of clinical training and 24 hours of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ride time. These experiences are scheduled outside of normal class time.

CERTIFICATIONS

Included in the course:

American Heart Association’s (AHA) Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) certification

Upon successful completion of the program, students are prepared to earn:

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification

State of Iowa of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification

All Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) EMT courses adhere to the 2009 National EMS Education Standards & Instruction Guidelines.

PRE-REQUISITES

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
    Note: If you’re not certified, you must complete the AHA HeartCode® BLS Online course and bring the certificate to the first class.

    Visit heart.org and search HeartCode BLS #20-3553 to get started. The cost of certification is $32.50.
  • Photo Identification (ID) Card Students must be at least 17 years old to take this course.
  • Background Check The cost for the online screening is $55.75.
  • Immunization Records Hepatitis B, Influenza, COVID-19**, QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood test—conducted within the current year

    **All students are required to provide proof of full vaccination as a requirement for entry into the program. Boosters for COVID vaccinations are not required for this program. Please contact the college for further details on vaccine requirements.

Orientation Day—Tuesday, May 24 from 6 – 9 p.m.

This is a mandatory orientation in which we cover important information, including: State of Iowa student registration, background checks, paperwork, student handbook and course overview.

  • Tuition: $1,863.00
    Upon registration, you’ll receive an additional expense sheet.
  • Textbook: $200.00
    “Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Essentials Package, 12th Edition”
    This textbook is approved by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and includes online access to MyBradylab and PlatinumEd.
  • EICC Uniform Shirt: $0.00, included with cost of tuition
  • Background Check: $55.75.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (If Applicable): $32.50
