Program Description for Hospitality Management
The service industry is growing. More than ever before, people have disposable income that can be put toward leisure activities such as traveling and dining out. The Hospitality Management program at Scott Community College can prepare you in nearly every aspect of this growing industry.
You'll be ready to go to work in front-line supervision/management at hotels, restaurants, and clubs anywhere in the United States or in other countries, including luxury resorts or cruise ships. Your degree will demonstrate that you already have the skills to perform the following job duties:
- Analyze operational problems and establish procedures
- Assign duties to other employees
- Collaborate on menu planning/serving arrangements
- Perform serving duties
- Manage finances
- Control inventories/monitor supplies, equipment and work areas
- Develop departmental objectives, budgets, policies, and procedures
- Perform personnel actions
- Purchase supplies and equipment
- Record production and operational data
- Carry out customer service
- Schedule parties and take reservations
- Train workers in food preparation, sanitation, and safety

Job Outlook for Hospitality Management
Employment of lodging managers is expected to grow 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is slower than the average for all occupations. Over the decade, travel and tourism is expected to grow, however. Median annual wages of hospitality managers were $46,800 in May 2010. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,460, and the top 10 percent earned more than $87,920.

Eastern Iowa Community College’s (EICC) Hospitality program is coming to Muscatine
Community College. This is exciting news with classes beginning with the college’s
second eight-week session on October 18, 2016.
EICC’s Hospitality program has been serving students for more than a decade and is housed at Scott Community College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Center. Offered at MCC will be the 17-credit hour certificate version of the program.
An especially exciting part of the program is that students will be doing internships at Muscatine’s Hampton Inn and, when they graduate, are guaranteed interviews at the Merrill Hotel and Conference Center currently being constructed on the riverfront.
The Hospitality program trains students for jobs in hotels, restaurants, conference centers and other facilities that regularly serve large groups of people. Students will be trained for a wide variety of positions including events, front desk, catering and banquets, sales, reservations and housekeeping.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Among the classes are Introduction to Hospitality, Sanitation and Safety, Hospitality Lab I, Professional Communication, Introduction to Computers and the internship will be held at the Hampton Inn.
