Tom McDonnell, EdD.

Tom McDonnellTom McDonnell has dedicated his more than 30-year community college career to student success. This dedication is demonstrated in his commitment to building collaborative working relationships, creating active learning spaces, and making data-informed decisions.

Tom currently serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs for Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in Omaha, Nebraska. MCC is a large, multi-campus system, where Tom manages an Academic Affairs operating budget in excess of $50-million annually. He has worked collaboratively with faculty and staff to review and revise general education, learning outcomes assessment, and student supports.

Tom is also committed to shared governance. He has served as both president and vice president of a faculty senate and has worked, in his capacity as an academic vice president, to get MCC’s Academic Council more involved in creation of college policy.

During Tom’s time as MCC’s academic vice president, he has helped lead efforts to create active learning spaces including a state-of-the-art Construction Education Center, and a new high-tech Automotive Training Center. Additionally, a new digital library and learning commons space is scheduled to open this fall at MCC’s Fort Omaha campus.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Iowa State University, a Master of Arts in Communication from Eastern Illinois University, and a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University. He has worked in multiple capacities in community colleges including as support staff, faculty, program director, dean, and vice president.
