
Multifactor Authentication for Canvas LMS Instructions
Eastern Iowa Community College students taking continuing education that utilize Canvas classes will be required to login to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) with multifactor authentication (MFA) beginning September 25, 2022. If you encounter technical issues, please contact the EICC Helpdesk at 563-336-3456.
MFA is a two-step process to ensure security for your Canvas LMS account. The first step is to login to the Canvas LMS with your username and password. You will have three options. We have provided the three options below with illustrations to help you complete the MFA process. Please note you will only need to choose and implement one of the three options.
Option 1 – Authenticator Application on your mobile phone (Recommended – Most Secure)
- Download the Microsoft or Google Authenticator application to your Android or iPhone.
For android users, you will download the authenticator application from “Play Store”.
For iPhone users, you will download the authenticator application from the "App Store".
- Login to iowacconline.instructure.com
- Enter your username and password
- You will then be prompted with the following screen:
- Open the Authenticator App (Microsoft or Google you downloaded to mobile phone)
- If you downloaded Microsoft Authenticator, follow the directions below:
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator application on your mobile phone
- Click on the + icon to add account. If you don’t see a plus sign, click on the 3 dots at the top right of the screen and choose + add account.
- Choose “Other Account”.
- You will be prompted to take a picture of the QR code illustrated above
- Your Microsoft Authenticator application will then provide a one-time password code.
- You will enter the code in the verification code box and click “verify”
- You can also click on “Remember this computer”. This will keep you from having to
enter a code every time you login to Canvas.
- If you downloaded Google Authenticator, follow the directions below:
- Open the Google Authenticator application on your phone.
- Click on the + icon on the bottom right of your screen.
- Click “Scan QR Code”.
- The Google Authenticator application on your mobile phone will provide with one-time password code.
- You will enter the code in the verification box and click “verify”.
- You can also click on “Remember this computer”. This will keep you from having to
enter a code every time you login to Canvas.
- Every time you login to the Canvas LMS you may be prompted to enter your code. You
will need to open up your Microsoft or Google Authentication application, access the
new code and enter it into the “verification code” box illustrated below.
Option 2 – Use Text (SMS) code for MFA
- Enter your mobile phone number in the “Phone Number” field. Illustration provided
below.
- Choose your mobile phone carrier from the drop-down list. (Ex: Verizon)
- Note 1: If your mobile carrier is not listed, you will need to use MFA option 1 or
3
Update: If your mobile carrier is not listed, you can try to choose another carrier and then provide your mobile number. For example, US Cellular is not listed. However, we chose other carriers and put in a US Cellular number and it worked. - Note 2: If you use Google-Fi as a mobile carrier, you can try choosing Verizon, Sprint
or T-Mobile as the carrier.
- Note 1: If your mobile carrier is not listed, you will need to use MFA option 1 or
3
- Click “Send”.
- You will receive a text to your mobile phone with the code needed to complete the
MFA process.
- Enter that code in the “Verification Code” field and click “Verify”.
- You can also click on “Remember this computer”. This will keep you from having to
enter a code every time you login to Canvas.
- You may need to repeat this process for future logins to the Canvas LMS. You will
enter your username and password. Then you will receive a text to your mobile phone
which you will enter in the verification code field. This is illustrated below.
Option 3 – Chrome Browser Extension (Least Preferred)
- Open up the Chrome Browser on the computer you will be using to access the Canvas
LMS.
- Copy and paste the following link into your Chrome Browser. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extension
- Type “Authenticator” in the search bar on the top left hand side. Illustration below.
- Click on the Authenticator icon. Illustrated above.
- Then click “Add to Chrome”. Illustrated below.
- You will then be prompted with a pop up. Click “Add extension”. Illustrated below.
- You will see a puzzle piece icon in the upper right hand corner by your search bar.
Click this puzzle piece icon. You will be prompted with a drop down option to pin
this extension to the browser. Click on the pin icon. Illustrated below.
- Go to Chrome and enter iowacconline.instructure.com
- Enter your username and password.
- Click the Authenticator extension icon on the top right of your Chrome browser. Then
click on the square highlighted in yellow font below. Illustrated below.
- You will see a + icon. Drag the + icon around the QR code. Illustration below.
- Drag and hold the + sign until you see the following message:
Click “OK” - You will now be able to click the Authenticator icon to access the code. Illustrated
below:
- Enter the code in the verification field and click “Verify”. You can also click the
“Remember this computer” box so that you are not prompted for MFA every time you
login to Canvas from this device. Illustration below.
- For future logins to Canvas you will go to https://iowacconline.instructure.com and enter your username and password. If you are prompted for a verification code, you will click on the authenticator application on the top right of your Chrome browser to access the code. You will then enter the code in the verification field provided by Canvas.
