Truck Driving Certificate

Eastern Iowa Community College’s Commercial Driver’s License program is based on the new entry-level driver training requirements. Just eight weeks in length, it includes classroom and driving instruction on rural, urban, highway, and interstate settings. Upon completion, students are prepared to take the state performance exams for a CDL license. CDL testing will occur on-site. Students must earn a Certified Learner’s Permit and pass a drug and alcohol screen and DOT physical in order to enroll in the course.

Practice for your permit

While you are doing this, please be mindful of when the next class starts and when you need to be registered.  Here are some links that will help you study to get your CDL Permit:

Take your physical

The physical needs to be completed prior to taking your Commercial Learner’s Permit test.  You will need to show the DMV proof that you passed the physical.  To schedule your DOT physical, call Alltest at 563-326-5855.  They are located at 4711 N Brady St #3 (Walnut Center Strip Mall). The cost for the physical is $65. This will be self-pay unless you are working with an agency listed above who has agreed to pay this for you.

Once you get your DOT physical from a registered DOT Medical provider, you can test for your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The cost of a CLP in Iowa is $12.00. You will need to take the General Knowledge, Combinations, and Air Brakes tests. While you are at the DMV for your test, you should also request a Certified Abstract of Driving Record ($7).  Documentation of your test completion and your Certified Abstract of Driving Record will need to be submitted to the Program Manager for review prior to the class. These will be self-pay unless you are working with an agency listed above who has agreed to pay this for you.

When you have determined what day you will start class, schedule your DOT pre-employment drug screen with Alltest.  The drug test must be done, and results received back no later than 7 working days before the class starts. The drug screen will cost $50. After the drug screen results are returned, students must sign up and query the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and produce a copy of the query for their driver file.  Program staff will walk through this process with students on the first day of class.  The cost of the query is $1.25.  This will be self-pay unless you are working with an agency listed above who has agreed to pay this for you.

Register for the class

You can begin anytime! Classes begin approximately every six weeks throughout the year. Coursework includes in person classes, on-line learning, and over-the-road instruction.

If you are working with a training provider who is funding your class, they will assist you through this process.  If you are paying for the class, you can register through Online registration, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Online Registration for Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is secured by one of the most reputable providers of online purchasing on the internet, and your information will not be shared with third parties, You can also register by calling one of the following registration numbers:
