English Language Acquisition (ELA)
Eastern Iowa Community Colleges provide a number of programs for adults to brush up
on reading, math, writing and English.
These programs include Adult High School Equivalency (formerly GED) and English Language Acquisition (ELA). Classes are offered at Clinton, Muscatine, Davenport, Columbus Junction, Maquoketa and West Liberty.
English Language Learners (ELLs) are asked to complete the online registration (Register Now link at the top of this page). If you need assistance with registration, you may visit one of our centers and a member of our staff will help you. When we receive your registration, you will be asked to come to one of our locations to complete an assessment of your reading and listening skills. The results of these assessments will help our instructors find the best learning plan to fit your needs and goals.
ELA classes expand English communication skills for students who are not native English
speakers. Classroom, small group and computer instruction are designed to promote
reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation development.
Students learn about personal communication, conducting business, work-related communication, and how to interact in the community. ELA classes at Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott Community Colleges and their satellite locations are available in non-credit and college-credit options, depending upon your needs and academic preparation. You may also choose to complete your high school equivalency, if needed. There is assistance available to students who are interested in transferring to college credit ESL programs at Scott Community College
Citizenship classes and High School Equivalency en Español are available in select locations.
