March 13 Student Communication
March 13 Update for Students in Nursing Programs
All Nursing clinicals, labs and simulations scheduled are postponed until further
notice, with dates for remake to be determined.
Many facilities are suspending student rotations, and we do not know at this time
when we will be able to return to the sites. Please know that we will be in contact
with all of our facilities and are working on a plan for rescheduling. Please watch
for more information when courses resume March 25th. We will relay messages concerning
clinical, lab, and simulations as soon as we possibly can.
March 13 Student Communication
We know that our decision to extend Spring Break and move all classes to remote delivery
from March 25 to April 5 has created questions for you. This message is designed
to answer many of those questions and provide resources to help you be successful
in these uncertain circumstances. Please read this information carefully, explore the resource links, and reach out
to your faculty members and advisors with any questions.
Why We Have Made the Decision to Move to Online Instruction
While at this time, no cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed within the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, we take the potential spread of the virus very seriously. President Trump is scheduled to declare a national state of emergency today, and Iowa Governor Reynolds has already done so at the state level. EICC has a responsibility to keep our students, colleges and communities safe and to help contain the spread of the virus. Upon the advice of public health officials to implement social distancing practices, EICC has made the decision to cancel face-to-face classes and to deliver them using online technologies such as Canvas for the period of March 25 through April 5. This is intended as a temporary measure. We will continue to monitor and assess the situation and make whatever changes to college operations are required to keep our students and employees safe, as recommended by public health officials.
Key Dates
- Spring Break for students will now be March 16-24.
- Students in face-to-face classes will begin or resume spring semester classes on Wednesday, March 25 via online delivery through Canvas. All classes will be delivered online through Canvas from March 25 to April 5.
- PLEASE NOTE: Previously scheduled online classes will continue as scheduled and are not affected by this spring break extension.
- All campuses will remain open and all services will operate as usual. Faculty and staff will report as usual, while following best hygiene and social distancing practices as possible.
- EICC will continue to monitor the situation and determine whether remote delivery will be extended. This decision will be made and communicated by April 1.
How You Will Attend Classes
During this time, your instructors will be using the Canvas site for your course (where you currently find your syllabus and grades) to communicate with you. They will be posting course material like important emails, assignments, lecture notes, readings, discussions, and possibly referrals to outside materials within the Canvas site. Here is a link with instruction to navigate to and through the Canvas site: www.eicc.edu/canvas
Campus Hours and Services Available During Remote Delivery
Our colleges will continue to be open to serve students, and most services will be available as usual. Some modifications to evening hours may be made. Campus and office hours will be determined soon and will be posted in EICConnect and in Canvas. The testing centers will remain open for proctored tests. Libraries, computer labs, financial aid, disability services and advising offices will be open, and faculty will maintain office hours. Career and technical labs will not be open for classes, but faculty will be on-site; please contact your faculty member about lab-specific questions. If you have an appointment with your advisor and would prefer not to come to campus, your advisor may be able to arrange a Zoom (teleconference) or telephone meeting instead; please call or email your advisor with questions.
Nursing and Allied Health Clinicals
After Spring Break clinical (in all programs) will continue as scheduled unless or until facilities do not allow students. We are in the process of looking at ways to accommodate hours if this occurs, however we do not anticipate that to be the case at this time. All clinical students will receive direct communication soon.
Access to Technology and Support for Online Delivery
Students without home access to the internet are welcome to use campus computer labs and wi-fi. We will also post a list of resources available in the community, including public libraries and other locations with free wi-fi. Students with disabilities and accommodations may need additional support, and we encourage you to reach out to the disabilities services coordinator at your campus for assistance: Marcia Larson mlarson@eicc.edu or 563-244-7083 at CCC, Jill Holler jholler@eicc.edu or 563-288-6013 at MCC and Jan Weis jweis@eicc.edu or 563-441-4027 at SCC.
We know some students have concerns about online delivery. We understand those concerns and want you to know that faculty and staff are committed to your success and are available to help you during this transition. We encourage you to take advantage of all of the people and online resources available to you during this time. If you’re considering adjusting your class schedule, please talk to your advisor and faculty member first. At this time, our standard refund policy remains in place.
We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we work to provide a safe environment to continue providing high-quality education focused on your success.
Continuing Education Classes
