COVID-19 Update
Iowa now has its first confirmed a number of cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), including
in the Iowa City area. While the virus continues to spread, at this time the threat
to healthy individuals, especially to those who exercise recommended precautions,
remains low.
EICC continues to monitor the situation closely and follows the best scientific advice from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Iowa Department of Public Health and has made contingency plans should the situation worsen. At this time EICC has not cancelled classes, closed campuses or cancelled scheduled events.
We have now made it easier for you to update your college contact information and provide emergency contact information. You can learn how to update your information here.
Still, as we approach our Spring Break, we want to pass along the following travel guidance:
- While CDC is not discouraging airline travel within the United States at this time,
there are areas outside the USA it is recommending travelers avoid. That information
can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html
- However, situations can change quickly so an area not currently suffering a COVID-19
outbreak may experience a new outbreak. If that happens, you may not be able to return
to the USA or Iowa as planned. Upon your return, you may be asked to quarantine for
up to 14 days even if you show no signs of infection.
- Cruise ship passengers are at increased risk of person-to-person spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19. The US government is advising US travelers, particularly those with underlying health issues, to avoid cruise ship travel. cdc.gov/travel/page/covid-19-cruise-ship
In addition, the CDC is advising seniors and those with chronic medical conditions to take extra precautions, including avoiding airplane travel, avoiding large group gatherings, and staying at home as much as possible if the outbreak is in your community.
The CDC continues to encourage everyday precautions including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after
blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place.
- If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60%
alcohol.
- Stay home if you are sick.
In addition to the above website links, more information is available on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-at-higher-risk.html
EICC asks students and employees to continue to monitor the situation and to take reasonable precautions to avoid contracting or spreading the COVID-19 virus. EICC will make decisions regarding its operations following the best advice available and with the health and safety of its employees as its first priority.
