
Lab Assistant - Science
Clinton Community College is seeking a part-time Lab Assistant I in the Science Department.
Part-Time 19 hours/week (Follows the 165 Day Contract for Fall/Spring classes)

Position Summary:
The science department assistant works with department faculty to assure that the laboratories are properly supplied with chemicals, equipment is working properly, and the laboratories function as best as possible to serve the students who utilize the laboratories. The assistant will help to maintain the science labs at the Clinton, DeWitt, and Maquoketa locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have an appropriate college science degree and/or related experience with a background in chemistry or biology. Must be able to type accurately, be familiar with supplies and general procedures used in science labs, and have good interpersonal skills.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares solutions and reagents, transfers appropriate amounts of chemicals adding hazard warning labels, and sets up apparatus for experiments in chemistry, biology, physical science and additional courses as needed.
- Maintains current laboratory preparation instructions. Tests new laboratory experiments.
- Operates autoclave and prepares media, stains, and reagents for microbiology.
- Maintains stock cultures of live microorganism, and assists instructors with preserved specimens.
- Assists instructors with maintenance and cleaning of materials such as glassware and instruments.
- Maintains equipment through cleaning, minor repairs, calibration, etc. Makes necessary arrangements for equipment repairs.
- Operates electronic still and assures that a large volume of distilled water is available for all laboratory needs.
- Maintains an adequate supply of materials in biology and chemistry stockrooms and labs in an orderly storage system.
- Orders supplies with approval of department coordinator or Division Dean. Obtains chemistry instructor’s approval, also, for any chemicals ordered. Informs instructors of deficiencies and orders requested items.
- Can use a computer for record keeping, obtaining MSDS, maintaining inventory listing of chemicals, and generating quotes for purchases. Under the supervision of the chemistry instructor, maintains inventory of chemicals and associated Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Assists with assignment for individual student drawers stocked with equipment. Performs cleanliness/condition inspections and keeps a record of available and in-use drawers each semester.
- Ensure safe disposal of hazardous waste by maintaining sufficient biohazard and sharps collection containers.
- Communicates with instructors to coordinated usage of shared labs and equipment. Assists with Science Department lab security.
- Assists in proctoring exams as requested by instructors.
- Is committed to providing quality service that meets or exceeds the expectations of internal and external customers.
- Performs other duties as required.
Physical Requirements:
- This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and standing at the lab benches.
