Transfer Information

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges offer three types of associates degrees:

Associate in Arts (AA) Designed for students wishing to transfer to a four-year school

  • Focus on general education courses in the liberal arts (math, science, arts, communication, social science, etc.)

  • Includes a small number of electives which can be selected to meet entry-level requirements in your field of study

  • Serves as the first two years of a bachelor's degree in non-science majors. We have formal transfer agreements with area public universities and many private colleges guaranteeing that your AA will transfer as fulfilling freshman and sophmore year requirements at that school

  • We also have made available transfer guides to assist you in selecting courses fulfilling requirements for popular majors at these schools (see Transfer Guides and Agreements). You may select a field of concentration in which you will focus your electives and work with a faculty advisor in your field, but this will not change the AA degree requirements

  • Many transfer students also choose to complete an AA Degree in Liberal Arts, declaring a more specific major once they transfer to a four-year institution

  • Track your progress in earning an AA:

Associate in Science (AS)

  • Designed for students wishing to transfer to a four-year school in math and science fields

  • Focus on general education courses in the liberal arts (math, science, arts, communication, social science, etc.)

  • Considerable overlap with AA degree requirements with greater emphasis on math and science courses

  • Serves as the first two years of a bachelor's degree in science, mathematics, or pre-professional degrees emphasizing science and mathematics coursework such as engineering, pharmacy, and computer science. Most colleges and universities will review each course you complete in your AS degree to determine whether a course fulfills a course requirement for the bachelor's degree

  • We have made available transfer guides to assist you in selecting courses fulfilling requirements for popular majors at these schools (see Transfer Guides and Agreements)

  • Track your progress in earning an AS:

Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

  • Designed for students wishing to seek employment in their field with a two-year degree

  • Focus on applied skills (nursing, automotive technology, culinary, welding, etc.)

  • Coursework based mainly in a single field

  • Does not fulfill most general education coursework toward a bachelor's degree

  • Some four-year institutions offer options for AAS transfer toward a bachelor's degree in which general education courses in the liberal arts (math, science, arts, communication, social science, etc.) are the focus of study at the bachelor's institution

  • We have made available transfer guides to assist you in identifying four-year schools that have signed a transfer agreement or develoepd transfer plans for our AAS graduates (see Transfer Guides and Agreements)

See Our Programs for a complete listing of all the programs we offer.
